Although you may have never heard of Crystal Lee Sutton, we hope you heard about the movie based on her true-life story. In this 1979 movie, Sally Field portrays a single mother named Norma Rae Webster who has little education and works at a factory. After her co-workers’ and family member(s) health is compromised due to poor working conditions, Webster becomes involved in the trade union’s activities.

In her efforts to fight against poor working conditions, the employer fights back with more work for less pay and posting fliers in hopes of dividing the white and black workers while lowering momentum. Webster attempts to transcribe what management wrote but they called the police to have her removed, but not before she stands on her desk with one word written on cardboard- “UNION”. Soon thereafter, the entire plant shuts down in solidarity and an election takes place resulting in unionization. POWER IN NUMBERS!!!
