Heat this Week!

Published on 18 June 2024 at 12:29

This week, we are seeing near record temperatures. It is likely that this summer could bring more of the same. Heat-related illnesses can be a serious issue outdoors when temperatures and humidity rise. These illnesses can include heat rash, heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke which can be fatal especially for those with existing respiratory and circulatory conditions.

It is important to know the signs, symptoms and precautions that should be taken as heat related illnesses can be deadly. Our Occupational Safety and Health Department has put together a heat hazard fact sheet that offers great information about heat related illnesses and prevention, including taking steps like encouraging proper hydration with water and/or electrolytes and scheduling the most intense physical activities for when the temperatures are cooler.  See the Heat Stress pdf for the signs and symptoms for heat related illnesses.
